Elaine, Emilee Lott & the Griffin Family
of Escalante

Elaine and Emilee Lott are the Granddaughters of Claron and Ruby Griffin.

Claron and Ruby Griffin began their business career in Escalante in 1945 when they bought the building on the south side of Main Street vacated by Courtney Spencer, owned by H.J. Allen.

They repaired the building and opened the only cafe in town. They added a west room where Ruby opened a dress shop. In 1946 C.R. and Ruby Griffin bought three motel cabins from Leo Munson.

They took a two year break in California but returned to add the general store to their block holdings, purchased from Grant Twitchell in 1952. In 1962 C.R. and William Davis purchased the DH Cowles General Merchandise store on the north side of Main Street. Over the years Claron purchased and built several other buildings in town.

The motel was sold to Gerald Johnson in the 70's. He ran it as "Quiet Falls Motel" until the Lotts purchased it back in the late 90's. They ran it 5 years. When tourism fell off they converted it into a boarding school. When two large boarding schools in the county were constructed and Escalante tourism increased, they decided to return to the Motel business, which brings us to 2010.
